Erminio “Charlie” Yacovetti
In 1946 my great-grandfather, Erminio Yacovetti opened Charlie’s Pizzeria on Rising Sun Avenue in North Philadelphia. A decade later, 3 of his children, including my Grandmother Lucy (Yacovetti) Rieger, opened a second restaurant on Roosevelt Boulevard which remains operating to this day.
In 1986, while I was graduating high school, my grandparents, Bill and Lucy, along with my parents and my Uncle bought out and took over the boulevard location. With the help of my parents, Patsy and Don Vittorelli, they operated Charlie’s until the sudden passing of my mom in 2013. While my Uncle has kept the business running, it was always my mother’s dream to eventually open another Charlie’s location in NorthEast Philly.
Now, with the support of my father Don, Sr. , my sister, Dr. Donna Vittorelli, my uncle, Dr. William Rieger, my wife Lisa and my sons Donnie and Zac, (representing our family’s 5th generation) I have opened The Original Charlie’s Pizzeria and have entered into our 9th decade of serving what I believe is the BEST pizza anywhere!
For those unfamiliar with Charlie’s, our pizza is traditionally served as a thin and crispy tomato pie with whole sliced mozzarella cheese placed underneath our sauce and toppings, followed by a sprinkle of grated cheese. While we do not serve slices we do offer a “mini” personal pizza. The new location will also be open for lunch as well as online ordering and we will be offering delivery through various delivery services. Having proudly served Philadelphia through 5 family generations, we’ll continue our longstanding customer-satisfaction tradition by making pizzas “the way you like it”!
